Q&A with Switchboard’s Co-Chair Tash Walker
In February 2021 Toff London proudly partnered with Switchboard, the LGBT+ charity. Switchboard offers a support helpline to the LGBT+ community and anyone considering issues around their sexuality or gender. To show our support for their vital work, for every watch bought from Toff London’s Pride collection, 5% of the sales go directly to Switchboard. In celebration of Pride Month, we’ve been lucky enough to get the chance to hear from Switchboard’s Co-Chair, Tash Walker. Here’s what she had to say about the collaboration and about the amazing work that she does.
1. What made you want to work for Switchboard?
Becoming part of an organisation that makes a difference was what made me choose this role. I am committed to the LGBT+ community and Switchboard was the best way for me to help. Switchboard is all about being there for those who need us most, and that’s what I enjoy.
2. How long have you worked for Switchboard?
I started volunteering for Switchboard about eight years ago now when I joined as a Listening Volunteer, answering calls, instant messages and emails. I then became more involved in the Media & Brand Team, which works on press, advertising, campaigns and partnerships. I was elected to the Board as a Trustee for four years working on our rebrand and national campaigns, before being appointed Co-Chair by the membership just over two years ago.
3. What have you enjoyed the most about working there?
I have had lots of amazing moments during my time at Switchboard. From helping and getting through to those struggling on the other side of the line, to receiving a Gay Times award on behalf of the charity. I particularly had fun marching with Switchboard at the various Pride events throughout the years. To lead the volunteers as part of Pride marches are moments I will never forget.
4. What would you say to someone who has never heard of Switchboard?
One of the main parts of my job is to raise awareness for the charity. By informing people of the amazing work that we do, we can support those who have no one else to turn to. I'm so proud to be a part of the LGBT+ communities, I want to help others feel that same sense of pride too. There are so many ways you can promote equality and provide support and Switchboard does exactly that.
5. Tell us about your partnership with Toff London?
We are so grateful that more and more companies are taking part in showing their care for the charity. The Pride watches are an amazing way to show your support for Pride. Not only does the partnership help to raise funds, but it also raises awareness which helps us grow to help more people.
6. What do the donations to Switchboard go towards?
The generosity of our supporters covers anything from phone bills to heating expenses. Without the support, we wouldn’t be able to keep answering calls. Switchboard relies on donations and volunteers to operate 365 days a year. Besides our helpline, we offer email and instant messaging services to people across the UK. They may be feeling isolated or want to talk about coming out, they may have a question about sexual health that they are too embarrassed to address with anyone else. The donations help us to continue with our vital work on promoting equality and supporting the LGBT+ communities.
7. What do you think of the Toff London Pride watch collections?
The watches are a great and unique way to express your support for pride. You have curated some amazing designs that stand out. They also make a difference by helping the charity and we are thankful for the donations that we have received from the sales so far.
8. How will you be celebrating Pride Month?
I will be attending lots of socially distanced events and peacefully promoting the charity to raise awareness.
9. Do you have any suggestions on how to celebrate Pride month?
Wearing the Pride flag is a great way to show your support for equality. Attending any peaceful and socially distanced events is also a fun way to share the love and to celebrate the movement. Even sharing social media posts promotes awareness.
10. What’s the best way to show your support for the LGBT+ community?
There are lots of ways to show your support to the LGBT+ communities, from donating to listening to podcasts. Even small things such as using someone’s correct pronouns is a small step that makes a big difference. But most importantly, standing up for and with everyone in the LGBT+ communities, and showing that you believe we have an equal place, with equal rights in society.
